Welcome to Hokkaido University Architectural Planning Laboratory

Our laboratory aims to realize a socially, culturally, and economically human-scale living environment in terms of architecture and urban planning and design. We are working globally and internationally to explore next-generation planning that contributes to improving the quality of life and well-being in a broad sense.

What's New

Explanation and exchange of opinions on the status of the study of the (tentative name) New Cultural Hall and an exhibition will be held in Asahikawa City. The laboratory has been commissioned to support the development of a basic plan for the Asahikawa Civic Cultural Hall since FY2024. (2025.4.17)

Professor Suguru Mori was awarded the AIJ Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Reviewing of Transactions (especially those with high contribution) for his significant contribution as a peer reviewer to the advancement and development of the science, technology, and art related to architecture. The Urban Design Center Tomakomai website has been launched. Professor Suguru Mori will serve as the center director. (2025.3.7)

A long interview about Proffesor Suguru Mori was published as an opinion interview article in the Asahi Shimbun (nationwide). The article introduces Professor Mori's experiences and efforts over the past 30 years since the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake. (2025.1.17)

 Professor Suguru Mori's commentary on the revitalization of central city areas in regional cities was broadcast on STV News Hokkaido. (2024.12.7)

​□ Shunki Sato (completed his master's course in 2024) and Nanase Kuroda (M1) received the Young Presentation Award at the Annual Conference of the Architectural Institute of Japan (Kanto), Architectural Planning Division in 2024.(2024.11.5)

Urban Design Center Tomakomai (UDC Tomakomai) was established. Professor Mori Suguru will serve as the center director. (2024.10.31)

□ At the 2024 Architectural Institute of Japan Hokkaido Branch Research Presentation Meeting, Kuroda Nanase and Furuya Kosuke (M1) received the Excellent Presentation Encouragement Award. (2024.6.29)

□ As part of the Hokkaido University 150th anniversary commemoration project, the "Kamishihoro Town x Hokkaido University Whole Exchange Festival" will be held on July 12th (Friday). (2024.7.12)

□ Miduki Ishida (B4)'s proposal won the ``Excellence Award'' in the ``1st Membrane Structure Contest.'' (2024.3.15)

□ Nanase Kuroda's (B4) proposal won the Part-time Lecturer Award in the 2023 Graduation Design Selection Review. (2024.2.22)

□ Ken Tsubouchi, assistant professor at Sapporo City University (completed his doctoral course in 2021), published a peer-reviewed paper titled ``Actual status of use of collective relocation sites and consideration of residential planning from the perspective of changes in neighborhood relationships: Disaster prevention collective relocation promotion project in the Koizumi-cho district of Kesennuma City.'' Received the 2024 Architectural Institute of Japan Encouragement Award for ``Focusing on ``.

□ An article introducing the basic design proposal for the Kamishihoro Town Hall (wooden extension + central building 3 → 2nd floor reduction), which our laboratory is in charge of, was published in the Hokkaido Construction Newspaper on December 14, 2023. (2023.12.14)

□ Gentai Obuse (M.A., 2019) received the 2023 Urban Society of Japan Paper Award for his peer-reviewed paper, "Analysis of Issues in Local Livelihoods from the Perspective of Trial and Error in Creating Mobile Vending Usage Bases : Focusing on Business Development in Depopulated Areas in Hokkaido, Japan". Professor Suguru Mori has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering.(2023.11.1)

□ Professor Suguru Mori has contributed to the improvement of the quality of the Journal of the Architectural Institute of Japan through more than a certain number of excellent reviews in the Transactions of the Architectural Institute of Japan, and has been awarded as a distinguished reviewer of the Transactions of the Architectural Institute of Japan. □ Ken Tsubouchi (Sapporo City University, Assistant Professor, Ph.D. Completed in 2021) was awarded the 8th JSPS Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2022 for his doctoral dissertation, "A Study of Clinical Research Approach for Environment Transition in Community Relocation after the Great East Japan Earthquake".
